The origin of the idea

Roland Barthes in Camera Lucida writes, “a photograph is always invisible: it is not it that we see” and “… the photograph is never distinguished from its referent". This ‘adherence’ of the referent formulates the special function of photography to reveal the universal, the real. Isolating time and space, photography is the real witness of reality. Photography represents this state of nature as a time of fullness or completeness which can highlight our irrevocable separation from the real. A separation we can actually distinguish thanks to photography. This separation means one subject can not perceive reality if not with photography.

Photography is a medium which is strictly connected to the actual world, time and space. Actuality, the state of things as actually exist, is strictly related to time, indeed it is thanks to time one subject experience the world, with no time there would be a firm world and everything would be stopped, so unreal. Photography can stop time and represent reality, but if the time of the shot changes so does the photograph, the representation of reality. Consequently if the condition of time changes so reality does.  Photography is a vehicle for informations, which one subject perceive differently according to its perception of time. This leads photography the aim of representing each person's perception of reality and time. Every actual thing depends on each person subjectivity, a photograph represents contingency upon a referent.

Development

Considering photography a representation of the world, if time changes so does the image shot. This metaphor leads concluding that time is a dimension which is subjective and not absolute, if one subject perceive time in a particular way so the state of the world can change.

The aim of the video is to demonstrate that a different idea of time leads to a subjective reality. The video is composed by interviews, where each person filmed is asked to response questions to create a dialogue about reality and time. Five different people are interviewed and each of them is organized in chronological order by date of birth.

Every person is asked the same questions to create a comparison between different point of views. The aim of this project is to express the different conception of time which influence each person’s view of reality. If time changes so reality does, and each person’s experience and beliefs.

The video demonstrates that information is connected to the concept of time and the concept of reality depends on each person’s subjectivity. This means that a different conception of time leads to decipher informations in a different way.

Style

The video is a interview of five different people collocated in chronological order for date of birth. Every person speaking does not appear but their discourses are the background voice. Each person in the video has a different perception of reality and time, so every image corresponding to a person is different from the ones of another person. The video shows metaphors of time like the flow of a river, the passing of clouds... etc and each personal perception of time follows a specific rhythm of the images.

Installation

The video is going to be played in a loop, and people can go and watch it continuously.

It follows the loop as every moments of the clock, indeed time has no end nor beginning. The video is going to be shown on a modern TV screen 32'' installed in the wall of the gallery by putting the wall studs using a drill. The choice of the TV monitor is not random but it resembles the format of entertainment and documentaries, and is the technology which better represents the different color corrections in the video. The decision of the monitor leads to put a armchair in the gallery where people could sit when watching the video. The chair in the gallery needs to be covered by an old bed sheet, resembling the old furnitures stuck in an attic, leading to the concept of time passing and the metamorphosis of reality.
